From the beginning, the aim for this project was to bring that classic Charleston look into this Birmingham home. Anytime we start a project at SCD, we try to round up inspiration from the client as well as on our own. That inspiration (via descriptive words as well as photos) helps us drive decisions throughout the project. SO, for this home, we knew we wanted lots of soft, yet warm tones, lots of natural and classic finishes, and that we wanted to bring in lots of natural light throughout each space.

We went with wide plank pine floors and stained them in an almost clear stain in order to keep the natural character of the pine. We worked with a local lumber supplier to find the rustic ceiling beams for the kitchen and living area, and kept them rough hewn as to preserve the reclaimed texture and character of the beams. Lots on unlacquered and aged brass was used both in the lighting as well as cabinet hardware and plumbing. I love using unlacquered brass so that you get that beautiful patina to the finish as you use the items and they age over time.

I get asked all the time about the paint color throughout this house… We used Farrow & Ball Slipper Satin on BOTH the walls and the trim. Its the perfect creamy warm white. The walls are in an eggshell finish and the trim in satin to give that variation between the two - but its all the same color!

This back mudroom, office, pantry area is one of my favorite places in the home! We specifically went on a search for brick that had that “old Charleston” character to it, and I think the herringbone pattern in the brick adds to that feeling that this brick has been here forever. We love the addition of a dutch door leading onto the front porch. In order to break up all of the white paint, we painted these built ins as well as the mudroom lockers in Farrow & Ball Pigeon, which is a very sophisticated, soft green tone. This color gives this small space it’s own identity and interest while still allowing it to feel like it belongs with the rest of the home.

There is nothing better than seeing a project come to life and this one has been a favorite from the start. I love the character that we were able to add throughout this home to make it feel as if it were historic and lived in, rather than brand new construction!
